CELPIP vs. IELTS: Which English Test Should You Take for Canada?

CELPIP vs. IELTS for Canadian immigration: format differences, predictability, speaking style, and how to decide which test to take.

Both CELPIP and IELTS are accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residency and citizenship. IELTS has two versions: Academic (for university admissions) and General Training (for immigration). For Canadian PR and citizenship, you need IELTS General Training. CELPIP General is designed specifically for immigration. Both map to the same CLB scale, so neither gives you a scoring advantage.

Speaking: Computer vs. Examiner

This is the biggest practical difference. CELPIP Speaking records your responses on a computer. You speak into a microphone with no live interaction. IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner lasting 11-14 minutes.

Computer-recorded speaking removes the human variable. There is no examiner mood, no interruptions, no pressure from eye contact. Some people find this easier to prepare for. Others feel more natural in a real conversation.

Writing Tasks

The writing sections test different skills. CELPIP Writing has two tasks: responding to a survey and writing an email. Both are practical, everyday scenarios. IELTS General Training Writing also has two tasks: writing a letter and writing an essay. The essay task requires more formal, structured argumentation.

CELPIP Writing is fully typed on a computer. IELTS paper-based Writing requires handwriting, though the computer-based version lets you type.

Predictability

CELPIP has a fixed format. Every test follows the same structure: the same number of questions, the same task types, the same time limits. Once you have seen one practice test, you know exactly what to expect on test day.

IELTS has more variation. Reading passages change in difficulty. Writing prompts range widely in topic. The Speaking interview depends partly on the examiner. This makes IELTS harder to prepare for systematically.

Test Duration

Both tests take roughly the same total time. The breakdown by section differs.

Writing53 min60 min
Speaking15 min11-14 min

Which Test is Easier?

Neither test is objectively easier. Both are high-stakes exams that assess the same four skills. The difference is format, not difficulty. CELPIP may feel easier if you prefer fixed structure and computer-based delivery. IELTS may feel easier if you perform better in face-to-face conversation and are comfortable with varied question formats.

CLB Score Mapping

IRCC converts both tests to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) levels. CELPIP maps directly: CELPIP 7 = CLB 7. IELTS scores vary by skill. The tables below show the conversion.

CELPIP to CLB

CELPIP levels map 1:1 to CLB levels. A CELPIP score of 7 in each skill equals CLB 7.

Which One Should You Take?

  • You want predictability: CELPIP. Fixed format means fewer surprises on test day.
  • You prefer no human interaction in Speaking: CELPIP. Computer-recorded, no examiner.
  • You want a live Speaking interview: IELTS. Some people perform better in conversation.
  • You prefer typing over handwriting: CELPIP is fully computer-based. IELTS paper-based Writing requires handwriting.
